South of Chiang Mai lie Lamphun and Lampang. Lamphun offers the fabulous Wat Haripunchai complex, founded in 1044. Lampang has Wat Prha That Lampang Luang, considered the finest temple in the North of Thailand. Enjoy Thailand's Elephant Conservation Center, with shows and rides, and a horse cart ride through downtown.
Spend a day shopping in the villages of Hang Dong, Baan Wan and Baan Tawai. The Shops in Hang Dong and Baan Wan feature ceramics and antiques. One long day will take you to Myanmar (Burma). Along the way enjoy a stop for refreshment and shopping. Then on to Wat Rong kun the beautiful white glass temple. Then across the border to explore the ancient culture and sites of Myanmar. Travel to see the famous golden triangle Thailand Myanmar and Laos. See the gold Buddha statue, opium museum, or take a long tail boat on the Meakong river.
Pai, a largely Shan (Chinese) town, is Northwest of Chiang Mai. It offers hot springs, nature preserve of animals and plants. Enjoys easy walking hike along the hills and green canyons. Relex at the waterfalls with swimming area. Visit the secluded Lahu and Lisu tribe villages. These are a peaceful people living in harmony with nature. Sleep in a quiet bungalow by the river ro on the hill and enjoy the incredible sunset and sunrise.
Capital of a 13th - 14th Century kingdom that included most of Southeast Asia, Old Sukhothai today consists of 21 areas of historic ruins, scattered throughout a beautifully-preserved World Heritage site. Nearby is Sre Satchanalai, another World Heritage site, with 13th - 15th Century ruins set amidst rolling hills. The Sukhothai style is considered the classic Thai style. Mae Sa Long resembles a mountain village in China's Yunnan Province. Settled by the fleeing Chinese Nationalist Army, The village once thrived on opium but now focuses on herbs and tea. Visit the tea houses, factories, and plantations. Nearby are a "Long neck" village (see above) and other Hilltribe villages. Enjoy a cool evening at a humble hotel overlooking the tea plantations. Return trip will include the Golden Triangle tour (see above).
Two movies ("Volunteers" and "Air American") were shot in Mae Hong Son, a largely Shan town set amidst mountains and a lake, with Shan and Burmese wats (temple). On the way you will see Ob Luang Gorge - Thailand's Grand Canyon - and its teakwood forest. Nearby are " Long Neck" and other Hilltribe villages. The trip back will include the Pai tour (see above).
Sameong Day Trip : Start your day at the lovely Orchid Farm and Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden. You may choose to see the Elephant show and a waterfall before driving up through lush mountains to visit remote Hmong villages where you may wander among the locals for a unique cultural experience. Continue your drive through beatiful pachwork vegettable farms and rice fields to hot springs where you may enjoy a hot mineral soak before returning to Chiang Mai.
