Pai, a largely Shan (Chinese) town, is Northwest of Chiang Mai. It offers hot springs, nature preserve of animals and plants. Enjoys easy walking hike along the hills and green canyons. Capital of a 13th - 14th Century kingdom that included most of Southeast Asia, Old Sukhothai today consists of 21 areas of historic ruins, scattered throughout a beautifully-preserved World Heritage site. Nearby is Sre Satchanalai, another World Heritage site, with 13th - 15th Century ruins set amidst rolling hills. The Sukhothai style is considered the classic Thai style. Mae Sa Long resembles a mountain village in China's Yunnan Province. Settled by the fleeing Chinese Nationalist Army, The village once thrived on opium but now focuses on herbs and tea. Visit the tea houses, factories, and plantations. Nearby are a "Long neck" village (see above) and other Hilltribe villages. Enjoy a cool evening at a humble hotel overlooking the tea plantations. Two movies ("Volunteers" and "Air American") were shot in Mae Hong Son, a largely Shan town set amidst mountains and a lake, with Shan and Burmese wats (temple). On the way you will see Ob Luang Gorge - Thailand's Grand Canyon - and its teakwood forest. Nearby are " Long Neck" and other Hilltribe villages. The trip back will include the Pai tour (see above).
